Sleeping in Savasana

My yoga journey

Exercise before bed time

on June 12, 2015

The Telegraph had an interesting article about exercising close to bedtime and the effects on sleep. It recommends that you don’t to intensive exercise within 3 trying to go to sleep. I generally go to bed at about 10.30pm and to sleep at about 11pm which means that I shouldn’t do intensive exercise after 8pm. Most of the week this is fine and I generally have class or training straight from work, so am finished by 7.30 or 8pm.

On a Thursday however I do a class from 8pm till 9.30pm, which means I don’t get home till 10pm and then usually have a cup of green tea and a snack and then go to bed. I don’t find that I sleep particularly badly on Thursday nights but then again I often don’t sleep well and I haven’t tracked which days this happens on.

I agree with the article that doing stretching or yoga close to bedtime helps. There is a really nice 30 minute restorative video from Yoga by Candace which I’ve done a few times, usually after spending the day travelling. I find that it helps me chill out, stretch and sleep in a strange bed, which is something that I always have trouble doing.  I’m going to try doing 10 minutes of stretching/gentle yoga for the next few nights before going to bed and see how it helps my sleep.
