Sleeping in Savasana

My yoga journey

The Cult of Yoga

on June 30, 2015

I don’t think it’s that big news that yoga is sometimes viewed as being a bit of a cult like activity and often participants get addicted to practice and preach the advantages of yoga to anyone and everyone that will listen but generally it’s not viewed as religious or an actual cult. Or is it just me that tells everyone that they should practice yoga more?

However Russian officials have taken it further, according to an article in the Moscow Times hatha yoga is now banned from municipal buildings to help stop the spread of religious cults. Most community classes that I’ve been to have about 30 people in a room that isn’t purpose built and has a mix of experience levels. I can imagine that the ones in Russia are similar.

I’m going to look into cults related to yoga and how they recruit more as it’s the sort of thing that I enjoy reading about and I think it’d make an interesting blog post. I certainly haven’t had anyone attempt to recruit me into a religion through yoga, has anyone else had experience of this?

I’m looking forward to your upcoming posts about the Cult of Yoga 😉
May I humbly suggest using your Google machine to search “cult of Sahaja Yoga” and certainly Hatha and Bikram Yoga as well. Be inspired and do take care!
