Is yoga safe?

Contorting yourself into strange positions, over stretching things and jumping up into handstands. It’s no wonder that sometimes people get hurt doing yoga but is it dangerous. A study in the American Journal of Epidemiology with the catchy name of “The Safety of Yoga: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials” looked at 94 studies, which included 8,430 people and found that it’s not more dangerous than no treatment or active treatment in injuries. In other words yoga is safe.

I find that doing yoga has helped improve my previous back injury. Usually I have a major flare up after camping or staying on an air bed for more than one night. This weekend I was camping and half way through the first night my air bed slowly deflated (it’s got a leak somewhere) and the second night I just slept on the ground. This combined with not sitting on proper seats and driving for two hours usually would be a recipe for my back hurting and needing to take painkillers for the next few days.  However it’s fine, I’m not in pain and haven’t been having any problems. I think that doing more yoga has helped to strengthen the muscles and my core. I certainly have had more injuries from doing other sports and exercises.
