Cultural Appropriation of Yoga

on November 25, 2015

There has been a lot in the news this week about the University of Ottawa in Canada cancelling yoga classes that have been held without issue for the past seven years because of issues of cultural appropriation.

Most of the yoga taught in the West shares roots from the Indian original but is quite different. I don’t generally think that many people teaching in the West would claim that their yoga is ‘traditional’ or authentically Indian. For me this is a case of political correctness gone too far.

I’ve written already about how I think that Yoga for university students is a good thing and that more universities should hold classes. This reaction may stop this trend and make universities reluctant to introduce it.

I hope that the overall reaction that has been in the press make the University reconsider and allow the classes to continue.
