Sleeping in Savasana

My yoga journey

Happy International Women’s Day

on March 8, 2016

Today is International Women’s Day. I very much believe in equality between men and women and that there is further work to be done with regards to women’s rights. I also consider myself a feminist and want my nieces to grow up in a better world and hope I can do my best in supporting them in doing that. Even if it’s just helping her balance on top of me.

Yoga is a slightly strange activity when it comes to equality. In general, certainly in Edinburgh the majority of yoga teachers are women but I still find that often the guest teachers or visiting instructors are about 50% male. Do we need to work as a community to ensuring that a higher proportion of female teachers feel empowered to go and travel and teach workshops. Maybe we should work on inviting people rather than waiting for them to put on a workshop.

So this international women’s day I’m thanking all the strong and powerful women who have inspired me both on and off the mat.
