Meditation without a guide

For Lent I have given myself the challenge of meditating every day. At the start of this challenge I was doing a led meditation every day. Generally either having a youtube video or podcast playing to guide me through my practice and to help me focus.

For the past week I have been working on meditation without a guide. It’s been difficult and a challenge. It’s much easier to clear your mind listening to someone else’s voice and guidance than just sitting down and doing it. I’m not sure if my mediation is ‘better’ when I do it myself but it allows me to focus on the things that I need to and for as long as I want to rather than a period defined by someone else.

I also realised that in terms of mediation I enjoy having a period of time switched off from the world, so I’ve started to read my kindle rather than sending emails or messages on my phone while on the bus to work. It’s a small change but it’s meant that I’ve read 80% of a book in the past week just on the journey to work. It’s a nice biography of a woman in prison and subsequent release and finding her way. It’s not a serious book but it makes me feel thankful about my life.
