Using Gym Membership More

I’ve been really bad recently, I’ve not been to my gym at all since before I went to Canada. That’s more than a month. It’s both a waste of money and I really should be getting back on track in terms of weight loss and regaining fitness.

My gym offers personal training sessions which I’ve never really looked at but I think for me it’d be a good option to make me more focused on a goal. I think having someone to be accountable to would be a good start. My plan is to go talk to them about options for this tomorrow and then book something in for the next few weeks.

I’ve been really bad for booking classes and then cancelling them the day before. I’m going to focus on booking less classes so I have two a week that I will attend rather than booking four with the intention of deciding which two I’ll do later and ending up cancelling all four.

I’m also aiming on swimming at least once a week. I really get benefit from it but haven’t been going as much as I’d like to. Yesterday I decided I was going but didn’t pack my bag to go, decided I’d go after I’d done something else and then decided it was too late and I was too tired. I need to get better at packing a bag and just going as soon as I’ve dropped Pico at home.

Become a Pilates Instructor for £12

I love Pilates and want to get back into classes as I feel that it compliments my yoga practice well. However when I see things like this it worries me. On a deal website Wowcher you can buy a Pilates Instructor Training course for £12

Perhaps unsurprising it’s an online course but it is described as enabling you to teach.

Would you like to do a class taught by a teacher who’s teacher training was entirely online and was only an investment of £12? I’m not sure I would.

I know that some teacher training courses aren’t great anyhow and some teachers are great despite it. However it worries me that with just online training and no in person requirement people can get qualified and insured to teach.

I’m not 100% convinced about requirements to sign up for Yoga Alliance or other training bodies but at the same time it gives some certainty around what training a teacher has had.

Restorative Yoga

Ahead of my course in March I have to attend some restorative yoga classes and write reflectively on them. It’s a bit odd but I understand why it’s part of the course.

I went to my first restorative yoga class as part of this at the end of January. It was run by Kat of Karma Yoga. It was at Om Therapies in the same room that I did my YTT in. I’d forgotten how cool the room could be and hadn’t worn enough layers so ended up wrapped in my wrap for most of the class. There were blankets so I would have been ok without it but next time long layers are needed.

It was a really lovely class with lots of moves that I hadn’t tried before. I especially like a move that was essentially a supported one leg locust pose. I hate the dynamic version of this but with a bolster on a block under the leg this was a lovely opening across the front of the hip and one that I’ll be doing again.

Kat also gave lots of hands on adjustments and used eye pillows as mini weights on the back of your neck to help to release into the pose. I’ll certainly be back as it was a lovely relaxing way to spend Sunday evening and I really enjoyed being a student again.

Meeting Candace 

I can’t believe that I hadn’t written this up before now. During the summer I travelled down to London to spend the weekend doing yoga with Yoga by Candace.

I’ve been following her and doing her YouTube videos since I started this blog and decided to get more into yoga. She introduced me to yin and her posts encouraged me to take the leap to teach. So when she announced that she was teaching a two hour workshop in London I decided to go. Then it sold out and she announced a second one that same weekend. Then one to ones were available too.

I turned what was going to be a weekend catching up with friends and doing some yoga into a mini-retreat.

Saturday’s workshop was was super busy and full. We started with a blindfolded section which was really nice. It meant that if you weren’t sure what you were meant to be doing then you just had to do what you thought and couldn’t look to others to check that you were doing it right.

Then we moved onto a more dynamic flow, hand balances. Some of them were very difficult and the side crow just didn’t work for me at all. For the last half hour of the class we came back to a long relaxation and yoga nidra.

After class Candace signed books and took photos. It was a super nice atmosphere and a really friendly bunch of yogis.

 

It was a super sweaty class with no air conditioning on a warm day so I was glad to head back to the hotel for a shower and to eat all of the carbs. I then had a one to one class that afternoon with Candace.

It was super nice to get to sit down and chat to Candace and ask her questions. I covered staying motivated to teach and how to come up with innovative ideas on how to plan classes. We also tried some poses to try to find the best way for me to stretch without overextending my hip. She suggested that I try bone broth or collagen. I tried collagen for a month and don’t think it made a huge difference so have stopped but it was worth trying.

Weights

I need to write a longer update post on my weigh loss and general how I’m coping with it but in the mean time just quick update, as part of my plan to lose weight and get fitter I joined a gym to mainly swim in which seems to be helping my hip pain. I’m also trying something new tomorrow and taking a class in weight training.

I used to do weights as part of Krav Maga classes. They are a really good efficient way to gain muscle and loose weight. I’m not going to be able to run or cycle for the next few years so I need to find something else that I enjoy that I can do to keep me healthy.

It’s going to be a bit of a challenge to do it outwith the class but if I aim for once a week on top of my swimming then I’m hoping that I’ll be able to start to see a difference within a month or so.
