My yoga journey

Q3 Aims and Goals Update

This should have been written at the end of September so I’m a little late but here’s my Q3 and a bit aims update.

40 minutes of home practice per week. Either in one session or two 20 minutes videos.

I’m really not in the habit of personal practice at the moment. I’m aiming on working on my fitness and health over the next few months. I really need to get back on track and get myself back in some form of shape.

Monthly attendance at yoga class or workshop.

I managed a class in July, two yoga classes in August and several in September. October also was a bit of a bumper month with three classes and a workshop.

Monthly blog posts

I’m not quite there with this but am working on getting back in the habit and I also have a few posts to type up and get out of my head.

Run quarterly workshops.

I held two eye pillow workshops in Q3 and are in the middle of fixing a date for another in Q4.

Completed goals

Complete restorative yoga teacher training

Complete current stage of professional exams.

Yoga Studio to continue to break even.

Tummee Yoga Sequence Planner

I’ve been trialling Tummee for planning yoga classes and for sequences to be able to send to people. I have been working on expanding my one to one teaching and feel that being able to give hand outs or email them after class will help with this and the person doing home work between sessions.

It’s a nice little website and is fairly simple to use. There is a directory of poses that you can narrow down by style of yoga, body part, chakra, level. It often comes up with other poses similar to the one you had in mind so is quite good for using different poses from your usual ones.

They have more than 1950 poses (I’m not sure why they don’t say 2000) so you can find most of the ones that you’d use and they have a feature of requesting poses to be added.

There are a number of shared lesson plans which doesn’t seem to include many yin classes but good for getting ideas from and maybe little parts of sequences. I’ve not explored this part fully yet but it’s nice to know that if I was teaching more dynamic classes I could use them.

The sequences that you create can be shared either by email, by pdf or be printed out. It took me a couple of attempts to get them formatted correctly and showing the information that I wanted but I think I’ve now set it correctly. I’m going to use these both in one to ones and also for homework of a yoga challenge that I’m going to be running in September.

In general it’s a nice website and worth £48 per year to allow the hand outs to be nicely formatted and add value to classes.

Full disclosure, if you sign up via the links above I get extra months membership added to my subscription.

Infused Water

I’m trying to drink more water as I’ve gotten out of the habit and don’t drink nearly enough on a daily basis. To help fix this I’ve done two things, one is to buy 1 litre bottles of sparkling water instead of diet coke at lunchtime, and secondly I bought an infuser water bottle.

The sparkling water is good in that it makes me feel like I’m getting something more exciting to drink that just water and also as there is a Lidl near my work it’s only 37p rather than the £1.20 that a 500ml bottle of diet coke normally costs.

The infuser water bottle is also good for encouraging me to drink. What I’ve been doing is putting cucumber or berries in to infuse over night in the fridge and then emptying it into my chilli water bottle to take to the office. That way it stays cool all day and I can just pour it into a glass to drink and it’s still cold.

I’m still experimenting and I’m not sure what else to put in it. What are your favourite water infused recipes?

2018 Aims Q1 Update

2018 seems to be flying past and I know I’ve not achieved as much as I would like to have.

My starting aims were

I’m doing better as this after being at my restorative yoga training as part of the coursework was home practice for 6 week and I’m still doing this.

Monthly attendance at yoga class or workshop.

I managed this and think I’ll manage this for the next few months.

Monthly blog posts

I’ve managed just about weekly posts and although they’ve been short it still has been good to write again.

Complete restorative yoga teacher training

I’ve done the in person part of this and just have a little bit of course work to submit at the end of April then I’ll be finished.

Complete current stage of professional exams.

I’m behind on this one.

Run quarterly workshops.

I’ve not ran one yet but I’ve a days in the diary for May.

Yoga Studio to continue to break even.

Yep we’re doing good this quarter.

2018 Aims

So now that I’ve reflected on what I achieved in 2017 it’s time to set my 2018 aims. I don’t do New Years resolutions instead I set myself half a dozen or so aims or goals to achieve and then review them quarterly to see if I’ve achieved them or if I need to amend them.

My starting aims are

40 minutes of home practice per week. Either in one session or two 20 minutes videos.

Monthly attendance at yoga class or workshop.

Monthly blog posts. If more frequent great but not to stress if not.

Complete restorative yoga teacher training.

Complete current stage of professional exams.

Run quarterly workshops.

Yoga Studio to continue to break even.

2017 Goals at Year End

So I’m starting writing this on the 31st December on a plane back to Edinburgh having been away for Christmas visiting family.

Do at least one yoga class per week.

I didn’t achieve this aim. I don’t know why but I just don’t seem to have a regular class that fits into my schedule at the moment. I’m working on home practice and doing videos at least weekly at home. I might speak to some other teachers about setting up a monthly teaching exchange.

Look into and book Yang Yoga Teacher Training – probably not starting until 2018 but at least sourcing a course that I want to do.

Over the course of 2017 this evolved as I decided that my hip probably wouldn’t deal with teaching regular yang yoga classes. I have gone in the other direction and I am booked onto a restorative yoga course in March. I have also started doing an online Yoga Shred course to be able to bring a bit more of the dynamic flow to yin yang classes every month.

Make the studio cost neutral.

It’s now more than covering the costs and has started to pay me back for the investment from 2016.

Teach 3 workshops.

I taught my first aromatherapy Yin workshop but ran out of time to run others. I’m planning another few in 2018 including one aimed at yoga teachers.

Find out cause of Hip pain and path to solve it.

I’ve got a diagnosis but I’m still not pain free. It’s unlikely to change but for now it’s manageable.

Already completed in Q3

Travel to two new cities.

New kitchen fitted.

Finish my 200 hour Yin Yoga Teacher Training.

New Aim added in Q3

Blog more consistently.

This didn’t really work. I’m not too worried about blogging as if I write things great, if I don’t then meh. I will at some point.

Losing my practice

So here goes. Confession time. I am a yoga teacher who other than demonstrating poses and taking photos for Instagram has done about 5 minutes of yoga in the last month. Yes that includes meditation practice.

As a result I’m stressed, run down and now ill. It’s also not helped by that I’m eating badly currently.

I know that I just need to get on the mat and start again but it’s hard. Having a dog also adds complications in terms of it being difficult to go straight from work to yoga or leave her for too long.

Videos I know will be the way forward but again starting is hard. My aim for tomorrow is 15 minutes of yoga. Not a long video but long enough to get started. 15 minutes 3 times a week should be achievable but at the moment it seems so far away.

Practice not perfection as always.

Q3 Aims Update

A lot has happened in the past three months and I know that I still have a long way to go. Here’s this quarters update following from my end of my end of June one

Do at least one yoga class per week.

I’m still not on top of this one. I’m working on a way that it fits into my timetable and getting more home practice in but I’m not there yet.

Look into and book Yang Yoga Teacher Training – probably not starting until 2018 but at least sourcing a course that I want to do.

I’m not sure if this is still right for me. I’m considering more learning and development but I’m not sure if I want to teach dynamic yoga long term.

Make the studio cost neutral.

It’s now making money with almost a month of extra running costs in the bank. I’m really happy with how it’s going and hope it’ll continue.

Teach 3 workshops.

I taught my first aromatherapy Yin workshop last month and it went down well. I’m planning another one for December so I’m not going to make 3 this year but I have a plan for more regular ones in 2018.

Find out cause of Hip pain and path to solve it.

I need to do a full post on updating this but I seem to have found a treatment and supplements that have helped reduce this to manageable levels.

Already completed.

Travel to two new cities.

Toronto and Niagara Falls visited already and a trip to Lichtenstein planned for November so that’s a whole new country.

New kitchen fitted.

Finish my 200 hour Yin Yoga Teacher Training.
New Aims

Blog more constistantly.

I love being able to come back and read what I wrote a year ago. I’m aiming for one post a week for the rest of the year. It shouldn’t be that hard given that I already have about 6 posts in my head that I just need to write out.

2017 Aims Q2 Update

This year seems to be flying by. It doesn’t seem that long that I gave my end of March update.

Do at least one yoga class per week.

I’m still not there with this. I’m trying to be better but life is super busy and it’s being a challenge. I’m getting better at doing short practices in the morning even if it’s just 5 minutes.

Look into and book Yang Yoga Teacher Training – probably not starting until 2018 but at least sourcing a course that I want to do.

Nothing yet booked but a few options that I’m looking at. I’m hoping to have something booked by September.

Make the studio cost neutral.

It’s still making money and I’m happy with how things are going. I’m still working on class timings for after the summer but I think I’m going to go back to three classes a week but with different timings.

Teach 3 workshops.

I’m still working on planning for this. I’m confident in teaching hour classes and have started expanding these to longer 90 minute classes but I think of workshops as being at least two hours long. I’m hoping that within the next quarter I’ll try one but I’m certainly growing towards this.
Find out cause of Hip pain and path to solve it.

I’ve got the cause of the pain formally diagnosed. I’m still working on how to minimise it for as long as I can. I have been swimming lots more and it’s not causing me too much more pain. I’m also taking a lot of different supplements which seem to be helping.

Travel to two new cities.

I’ve not been anywhere new this year yet but I’m headed to Toronto and Niagara Falls in September.

New kitchen fitted.

That’s the kitchen done and it’s beautiful. I’m enjoying having everything back in it’s proper place and bring able to cook.

Already completed.

Finish my 200 hour Yin Yoga Teacher Training.

New Aims

I’m not 100% sure on what to add, I feel that I need to focus on adding yoga into my life on a more regular basis. I miss it and I know that I feel better when I do more classes. I need to find a way of making time for classes or get better at home practice.

Weigh loss/Fitness Update

Here I am three and a half weeks after I started my focus on health and weight loss. It’s been a challenge to keep on track but I’m still going.

I’ve lost 4.2lb so with my aim of a pound a week I’m slightly ahead. I know the first ones will be easier than the last so better to be ahead now.

I’ve been swimming at about three times a week and am beginning to enjoy it more. It’s a bit of a challenge to have everything sorted and ready to take with me but it’s beginning to be more of a routine and I’ve now got places that everything goes in my bag and it makes it a bit less of an effort.

In terms of diet it’s been hard keeping tack of everything that I eat. Be it good or bad it goes in my food log. I’ve generally been sticking to about 1600 calories or less each day but there have been occasional going overs. I’m trying not to beat myself up about it and work on the 80/20 rule. Keep to it 80% (or more) of the time and not stress about the 20%.

I’ve only had one day were I completely blew the number of calories and that was as I went to a gin festival and drank all of the gin and then ate all of the bad food. What I remembered to track was 240% of my target calories. I’m pretty sure I drank my daily target alone. Still I got back on track and didn’t let it stop me.
