Mindfulness in Nature

One thing that I have worked on improving since I got my dog is mindfulness. It’s a lot easier to go for walks in nature and be mindful about it when I’m walking with her.

You can’t help but be in the moment when walking with a dog. Especially when it’s a dog that is nervous around other dogs. I have to be aware of other people and dogs and how she will react to them. I have to be aware of roads, bikes, runners and the surroundings. If I don’t notice something and she starts to bark at them then I’ve failed. It’s difficult to be present and mindful. There are times where I want to just sit on a bus and get to my destination and not have to walk in nature and be aware of others but that’s not what she needs.

I have to put her before me at times and it’s hard.

Losing my practice

So here goes. Confession time. I am a yoga teacher who other than demonstrating poses and taking photos for Instagram has done about 5 minutes of yoga in the last month. Yes that includes meditation practice.

As a result I’m stressed, run down and now ill. It’s also not helped by that I’m eating badly currently.

I know that I just need to get on the mat and start again but it’s hard. Having a dog also adds complications in terms of it being difficult to go straight from work to yoga or leave her for too long.

Videos I know will be the way forward but again starting is hard. My aim for tomorrow is 15 minutes of yoga. Not a long video but long enough to get started. 15 minutes 3 times a week should be achievable but at the moment it seems so far away.

Practice not perfection as always.

Weight loss Update 

So it’s been a month since I last posted about my weight loss journey. I’m doing this to be happy with my body rather than just hit a number.

However this past month has been challenging. I’ve not lost any weight. I know why this has happened, I have been stressed, busy and not swimming or exercising as much as I would like. I’ve still got 60 days to get back on tack. I’m not sure I can loose 10lb which would take me to the 120lb aim that I set in that time but maybe I’ll aim for 8lb or just under 1lb a week. 
I’m back on my meal prep and ensuring that I have lots of different options that are healthy and low calorie in the flat. I’ve got snacks and easy preparation food so when I’m stressed and getting home late I’m not tempted to get take away. 

I’ll post another update in two weeks when I hope to have made some progress.

Mindfulness Course

In November I decided to look further into mindfulness. I was already undertaking a regular meditation practice and I knew bits about mindfulness but wanted to learn more. 

One of the voucher websites had an offer on a course so I decided to book and try it. It wasn’t the greatest course, they sent you the materials and pretty much left you to get on with it. There was a series of questions that you had to answer and send back to show that you’d read the material and tried the techniques. 

One of the suggestions in the course that I’ve taken on board was starting small and working it into your everyday. I’ve done so via the very British medium of tea. Once a day I drink a cup of tea, ideally made from tea leaves and from a stove top kettle. I sit down either at the kitchen table or on the sofa and drink it. I don’t read, watch tv, look at my phone, plan lessons or 100 other things that I usually do while drinking it. It only takes 5-10 minutes out my day but it’s nice. 

I’m attempting to be more mindful in my eating and not snacking as much but that’s a bigger challenge and one that I’ve a few underlying issues to deal with first.

I’ve had a particularly busy and hectic couple of weeks at work and at home. Lots to organise and to finalise over the next few weeks.

I’ve downloaded an app to my phone, Headspace. It’s quite good an simple interface. I’ve done two lessons so far and enjoyed them. The idea of taking 10-15 minutes each day to do a little mindfulness is great. I’m not sure if the app is what I’ll use longer term but I’ll certainly do the ten lessons that the app comes with over the next week or so.
